CUMBUM-ITS LOCATION

The Cumbum Valley dwell below the amphi-theatre of rich vegetative hill stretch of Western Ghats in the state of Tamil Nadu where Mullai Periyar river and its tributaries of Suruliyar, Shanmugha Nadhi irrigates the fertile landscape. This Valley is located 35 miles South of Kodaikanal which is a hill resort and 60 miles South East of great temple city of Madurai inTamil Nadu State.

ITS LANDSCAPE

The fertile Valley of Cumbum abounds with agricultural activity. The pristine area has acclaimed as prime agrarian landscape in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is because of its fertile condition the Government of Tamil Nadu has established College of Horticulture and Research Centre in Periyakulum, at the foothill of Kodaikanal.

ITS RESOURCE

As per the statistic of Tamil Nadu Government, Theni district stands first in the field of Horticulture. The Agricultural activity in Cumbum valley has extolled Tanjore, the grainery of Tamil Nadu. Generally, India’s water resources greatly depend upon Northeast and Southwest monsoon for its agricultural activities. Cumbum Valley receives its showers regularly as nature’s bounty. The monsoon acclamatize the Cumbum valley and regular seasonal showers facilitate to undertake all types of Horticulture activities.


ITS PRODUCTS
All types of cash crops are grown here i.e., Coconut, Banana, Grapes, Sugarcane, Paddy, Groundnut, Cotton, Maize, Sunflower, Vegetables (Beans, Cabbage, Beetroot, Turnip, Brinjal, Lady’s finger, tomato, etc.,

Good yield could be sustained for a century with good interventional and adequate preventive care. Coconut trees over 80 years of lifespan are prevalent in Cumbum Valley. Till to-day, the trees are yielding good number of nuts.

Moreover, all parts of the trees are of great utility value. It is a popular saying in Tamil Nadu,” He who owns a thousand Coconut trees is a King”.
